So good! All-Natural, organic balms, scrubs & skin care

By Sarah Schraad

April 2007

From organic Peppermint Quench Lip Balm to Almond Chai Body Scrub, Valynne’s new line of all-natural skin products is specifically designed for sensitive and dry skin, conditions that many living in Colorado experience.
Her company, Mountain Girl Organics, launched in January. It features a line of bath salts, sugar scrubs, lip and cuticle balms, and body butters.
“I’ve been skin-conscious since childhood due to my tendency to get sunburns and random rashes,” says Valynne. “Finding products that didn’t cause my skin to break out or make it even worse has been difficult, and so it just made sense to go into the natural skin care products business.”
After years of exploring organic alternatives to chemical foods and cleaning products, Valynne began taking how-to classes focusing on natural lotions, soaps and candles at Colorado Free University and Apothecary Tinctura in Denver. Both offer community classes and workshops that inspired Valynne to take her passion a step further.
‘Our skin is very permeable, and it is important that each of us determine what we are subjecting it to every day,” Valynne says. ‘Modern society follows a ‘let’s try any number of chemical or surgical means to fix it or cover it up’ mentality, and it took me a while to realize that less usually does mean more when it comes to basic skin care.”
Valynne purchases the ingredients for her products from organic wholesalers, herbal suppliers, co-ops and local natural shops. Her scrubs, lip and cuticle balms, and body butters are all beeswax-based. The beeswax and honey comes from a local keeper who showed Valynne how his chemical-free beekeeping process works.
The oils and butters in her products also are organic. Some of her favorite ingredients include sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, cocoa butter and shea butter. Organic essential oils are always used in place of synthetic fragrances. Valynne currently makes small, made-to-order batches from scratch.

Valynne creates all-natural skin products.

“Because the skin-care industry is not regulated as well as it could be in the states, many store- bought items are labeled as organic but may have only one or two organic ingredients, if any,” adds Valynne. ‘Studies show that the chemicals we use on our skin, such as synthetic fragrances and preservatives, really do more harm than good. My products, on the other hand, are truly as natural as you can get.”

In addition to her e-Bay store, Valynne’s products will be on display at the Evergreen Farmer’s Market this summer.

Colorado-inspired gifts in Evergreen since 1948

by Stehphanie Janard

February 2008

Susan Fariss moved Evergreen Crafters into the former Lauren Brooks store while renovations are underway at the original Main Street location

For well over 60 years, Evergreen Crafters has delighted locals   and tourists alike with a seemingly limitless variety of Colorado souvenirs and rustic Western merchandise.

Whether you’re on the hunt for a gift made by a local artisan, like the Mountain Girl line of organic bath products, or you have guests in town who want to pick up a postcard, t-shirt or the ubiquitous shot glass, whatever you’re looking for can probably be found at Evergreen Crafters.

Browsers are warmly welcomed. The shop’s artfully arranged displays of Southwestern jewelry, lodge-style home décor and even picnic sets are sure to prompt a mental note to come back soon.

Evergreen Crafters is particularly known for stocking unique items not widely found in other stores. Candles made with wooden wicks that prevent melting wax from putting out the flame and that crackle like a fireplace are a current bestseller, while over in the children’s section, “paintable” puzzles and Genesee author Nancy Savage’s beloved “Nickel the Buffalo” books are in high demand.

Old favorites like the MinneTonka line of boots, slippers and moccasins stay popular; colorful tile art, custom ornaments, and fleecy throws and pillows are consistent sellers, too.

Along with tasteful fashion and décor, Evergreen Crafters also sells tasty lines of food. From sizzling salsas to soothing healing teas, the store’s wide selection can help you create a bountiful gift basket sure to please any gourmand.

In fact, Evergreen Crafters is the kind of shop where you can find just the right gift for just about anyone, and at surprisingly affordable prices. It’s a tradition to which previous owners and current owner Susan Fariss are committed.

Susan has been affiliated with Evergreen Crafters for over 27 years—she bought the store four years ago.

Evergreen Crafters is currently located directly across the Main Street from the Little Bear while its original location is undergoing renovations. Susan expects the move back won’t take place until sometime next year; but, until then, she’s made sure the store’s look and feel is anything but temporary.

Come by and see for yourself why Evergreen Crafters continues to be a “must visit” store in the heart of downtown Evergreen.
Evergreen Crafters is temporarily located at 28076 Highway 74 in the old Lauren Brooks building. Call 303-674-3153 for store hours. Open seven days a week. Free gift wrapping.
